Double Exposure – Our Backyard

Artists: Capricornia Printmakers x Rockhampton Photography Club

Capturing imagery, is in its most fundamental form, the core business of both photography and print making.  Bringing these natural bedfellows together in the form of collaborative exhibition is a great way of lending and blending the best of both artistic practices.

Double Exposure: Our Backyard is the sixth exhibition in an ongoing series created as a collaborative project by Capricornia Printmakers Inc and the Rockhampton Photography Club since the initiative’s inception in 2016.

Presenting both a challenge and creative opportunity, Double Exposure brings together a photographer and printmaker to pair collaboratively in an exploration of alternative interpretations and divergent creative processes with the aim of producing an artwork that represents a synthesis of the two.

In this iteration of Double Exposure, the theme “Our Backyard” offers a further duality for interpretation with both common understandings and individual experiences of a familiar space at play.

While grassed lawns, hills hoists and barbeques might form part of the quintessential suburban backyard, since the late 1990’s this iconic feature of the Australian housing landscape has been rapidly shrinking.

This trend towards not only smaller lot sizes but more significantly, larger dwelling footprints, in addition to a growing need for high-density, apartment-style living, may relegate “Our Backyard” to more mythical status rather than its traditional collective reality.

But for now, “Our Backyard” continues to be a place where bird wings, clothes lines, swing sets, flower beds and shade trees are found and captured.
