Wild. Life.
Artist: Emma Ward
The impetus for wild. life. was planted during a traumatic event that occurred almost ten years ago, after my father suffered a heart attack. We were in a stereotypical hospital room at the time, sterile and white, when dad began laughing with delight at the sight of a strange gecko scaling the wall!
While dad was clearly hallucinating, I joined in his journey of the make-believe lizard, and we shared both the moment and a huge belly laugh. I did not know it then, but this episode was to signal the beginning of my personal experience with dementia.
Watching a family member struggle with memory loss and cognitive change can be incredibly tough and amidst the despair that followed, this happy moment is still one that I cling to. The sense of joy for my dad was very real, and I wanted to nurture this happy imaginary moment and capture its whimsical spirit to share with others.
Although we often view memory loss with great sadness, and hallucinations with fear, there are also times that these moments bring unexpected joy, and a connection to the innocence of childhood. These moments bring delight, and these moments, however brief, should be celebrated. And it is with that in mind I present to you this gift, to celebrate our shared experience of a wild. Life.
Experience a profound change of narrative around memory loss as you explore the worlds in between. Wander through a menagerie of fantastical creatures where forgotten memories resurface, and family life is celebrated.
