Artists: Derek Lamb x Hanbing Lu
Derek and Hanbing have crafted a bespoke series of artworks responding to the early history of The Rockhampton Benevolent Society, now Benevolent Living. This exhibition celebrates the remarkable contributions of The Benevolent Society and the unwavering support of the local community, that combined to create a legacy that continues to resonate in Rockhampton today.
Derek Lamb, a letterpress printer and maker of books with a background in history, has delved into the Society’s archives at Central Queensland University. Through his research, he has unearthed themes and compelling stories that he brings to life through his letterpress printed art. People were at the heart of the Benevolent Society, and Lamb's response vividly portrays the foibles, daily lives, and intriguing characters involved in the Society’s work.
Embarking on a creative journey, Hanbing Lu’s exploration of The Benevolent Society’s history felt like travelling through time. Her aim was to interpret the essence of early Rockhampton based on the photographs in the Society's archives, using a variety of mediums. “I was deeply inspired by the crucial role women played in shaping the early Rockhampton community, despite their contributions often being overlooked. Additionally, I found it fascinating that the Chinese community also supported The Benevolent Society's cause. Through my artworks, I hope to uncover untold stories and breathe life back into these significant moments from the past.”
