Join us for the opening of, Double Helix, The Long Gallery's newest exhibition bringing together the works of two Central Queensland artists, Christine Holden and Julie Thornton.
Through their distinct yet deeply complementary practices, Holden and Thornton explore the intersection of environment, movement, and material. From sculptural marine debris to flowing wearable art, their works are intricately tied by a shared narrative of renewal and purpose – a true double helix of artistic vision.
Opening Event & Artist Talk
Be among the first to experience this unique exhibition and hear directly from the artists themselves. The Opening Event will feature an Artist Talk, where Christine and Julie will share insights into their creative processes, the stories behind their materials, and the environmental messages woven into their art.
Artist Spotlight: Julie Thornton
A longstanding creative in Rockhampton, Julie Thornton has spent years redefining fibre art, transforming it into expressive, wearable sculpture. Using a fusion of handmade and hand-dyed fabrics, Julie creates garments that come alive through motion — her pieces are not merely worn, they are activated. Each garment is a testament to the power of the body as part of the artwork, turning movement into narrative and fabric into fluid storytelling.
Artist Spotlight: Christine Holden
Hailing from Boyne Island, Christine Holden creates captivating sculptures from ghost nets, fishing lines, and salvaged marine rope. Her art is both beautiful and urgent — drawing attention to the environmental consequences of marine waste while offering a vision of reclamation and hope.
Each piece is ethically sourced, hand-woven, and filled with intention. Christine’s sculptures remind us of the delicate balance between nature and human impact, and the ways in which discarded materials can be transformed into symbols of renewal.
🧵 Double Helix is now showing in the Long Gallery, 60 West St, The Range.
🎨 Artist Talk and Opening Event: Sunday 18th May from 10am-12pm.
